CHAPTER 5 RESPONSE

QUESTION 1:

RCD is when the scientists take small fragments from bones that are fossilized in the ground and measure the carbon that is in them. Over time the carbon decays nd becomes a completelty different form of carbon. Scientists know the exact time that it takes for the carbon to change so using the ratio carbon 14/ carbon 12 they can find out how long ago that thing was alive.

There are some problems to RCD though. The new ways of radio carbon dating are gettting different results from the earlier ways. There is also a chance that certain animals found the fragment of bone or seed and tried to eat it which would cause the carbon in the seed or bone to change which could throw off the date. Theres also some situations where there is not enough carbon in the bone but there is a plant near the skeleton so the scientists take the carbon from the plant because it was probably near the skeleton at around the same time but there is always a chance that the plant was there after the body was long gone.

INDIAN WRITING ASSIGNMENT

We hadn't expected to fight and eventually be killed that day. We Indians tend to take people for their word and when he said we would be given no harm we let our guard down. It was a very confusing day and everything happened so fast.

We weren't prepared for battle but we had prayed to our god and king for protection. For many of us our gods let us and our king down but others felt it was the gods way of letting us to their eternal kingdom. When the strange invaders approached us they spoke in a weird language. They gave us a small book which the king examined. The strange man tried to touch our grateful king and was hit. He is lucky that was all that happened to him. The king threw down the book which somehow provoked the invaders into attacking us.

They were on top of us in an instant we knew not what to do so we formed our ritualistic formation. This is a special way of praying to our gods for protection in which you all jump into a pile creating a mound. The warriors came and struck us down any way as we waited for our gods. Many did not fight yet they still killed. the survivors in the field below us also did not fight and were still killed and many ran. The invaders captured and killed our king.

GEOGRAPHY QUESTION

I think that the geography of the Moriori island had a big impact on them. The island was not big at all which lead to a small population of people that all lived near each other. They didn't have the space to have wars between different tribes which is why they were so peaceful. They were forced to go to a hunter-gatherer society because the islands soil could not grow their native crops. The animals they hunted were so easy to kill they didn't have to develop advanced weaponry. This all lead to their extinction because they wouldn't fight, they had no weapons, and they had a very small population.

NEANDERTHALS

I think the Neanderthals went extinct because of a few different reasons. I would think the main reason would be a huge war because the species with the better weapons survived and that shows to me that they killed the other species. The only problem with the war idea is the Neanderthals went extinct over 2000 years and i feel that is a long time for war. I also am not sure that the protohumans even thought about war. I wouldn't think that they thought about killing other species unless they were territorial and they killed on instinct if other beings entered their lands. Maybe the Neanderthals started the war when they saw the new strangers entering their territories. That still wouldn't explain a 2000 year war to me so I don't feel that the war (if there was one) started right when the 2 species met.

Maybe the 2 species worked together for most of the 2,000 years and some argument led to war near the end of the Neanderthals existence. I also think that a huge number of Neanderthals died off because of foreign diseases. There had to have been diseases that were unusual to Neanderthal territory and without a built up immune system I think it would have killed many.

There also is a chance that the societies bred together and the Neanderthals genes were not as strong as the other species and the new babies were not in the Neanderthal species anymore. I don't think that could have played to big of a part in the extinction though. What I think happened is the 2 species tried to live together but over the years diseases killed off a lot of the Neanderthals and eventually their was an argument that led to a war which ended in extinction for the Neanderthals.

VOCABULARY WORD: FACTOID

Well this is a picture for factoid obviously and it pretty much explains itself. A factoid is a small "fact" that probably isn't true.

VOCABULARY WORD: ADVERSE

I chose this picture for adverse because adverse means that bad things are happening to you and a rain cloud symbolizes a bad day

VOCABULARY WORD: FORTE

I chose this word for forte because forte means your strength ( not necessarily muscles ) and this is a picture of a guy with muscles.

VOCABULARY WORD: AGGRAVATE

I chose this picture because it shows someone with a really mad look on their face and aggravate is basically egging someone on when they are already mad and provoking them to get more angry

CAMELDOGS

Hi my name is John. I live alone in a desert that is 5000 miles away from the nearest city and the only transportation I have is a Cameldog named Jim. He is basically a mix between a Camal and a dog. He can run as fast as a dog and he looks just like a dog but he can travel really far like camel. He is a close relative to ManBearPig which is half man and half bearpig or was it half bear half manpig? Anyways back to my story I live here with Jim and my tv.

One day i turned on my tv and noticed that the news was saying that there would be a new ice age coming very soon and you would have to get to the closest city if you wanted to live. I thought they were lying and so I just switched the channel to spongebob's new episode and laid back to rest. Apparently the news was right because i woke up trapped behind 150ft of snow.

I decided now was the best time to pull out my only spoon and start digging. Eventually i made my way through the snow and was able to get Jim outside. I ran inside and got my orange turban to keep my head warm and i was off. Jim ran the fastest he had ever run and the falling snowflakes froze behind us. We arrived in town and I ended up living happily ever after

300 WORDS

Well i have a lot of thoughts about the article that we read in Mr. Ross' class. It basically was about a mom who found her son after he had commited suicide by hanging himself. She had looked through the books that he used to stand on and found a couple Dungeons & Dragons books which even thought they were not at the thop of the stack she felt they were the main part in her sons suicide. Now I do feel bad but I can already tell she is going to blame her sons suicide on a video game.

I feel that all the people who blame suicides on games are just people looking for a quick excuse that they can use to make them feel like it wasn't their fault in any way. I think she was in so much shock on what had happened that she used the first thing she found as an answer to why he did what he did. I really think that all the people who are taking their lives to get certain games band based off these internet rants of a parent in denial are wasting time and effort on something so stupid when they could help out with something that will actually change the world for the better.

I also think that the kids who do commit suicide are under different influences than just a game. I think that they probably had problems with other people and within their own family and that would be the main reason why they would kill themselves. I actually kind of think that the games help out many kids if they would be in the situation of not having friends or having a feeling of belonging. Games like D&D help bring people together that share the same interests and hobby's. People need to start realizing that games are not any reason to blame for suicides and maybe start believing that they didn't do all they could to help their kids. Ya i know that sounds harsh but its the truth.

E:PROMPT #1

I would personally not disconnect from the man no matter who it was for a couple reasons.

If it was me I don't think i could really live if I knew that I had killed a man whether or not it was considered murder. I'm not sure how anyone else would feel but the guilt would definitely be with me for the rest of my life.

I also think that even tho you were taking there without knowing it wouldn't be too hard to just sit in a bed for nine months if you have books/video games and have your schoolwork coming to the hospital. I think this might be a little harder decision for me if it actually hurt me because its hard to put someone else so far in front of yourself that you'd be willing to get physically hurt for them but you would most likely be able to recover and they would not be able to recover from death so to me the answer would be obvious.

Now I don't think that it would necessarily be unethical to disconnect because you were taking there out of your will but when you can save someones life with very little effort i don't see why you wouldn't. Even if it wasn't someone famous or someone you liked when its a life and death situation i don't think any of that should matter.

BOOK REVIEW

Jurassic Park Review
by Nolan Lalor

4/5

I recently read Jurassic Park by Michael Chrichton. I must say that i was impressed an I enjoyed it more than the movie. The book basically starts off explaining the types of genetic research that plays a big part in the rest of the book. Basically what has happened is a rich elderly man has come up with an outrages idea for a new form of entertainment and he invests a lot of money into it. He wants to make a resort/amusement park that revolves around dinosaurs. Not just pictures of dinosaurs, real, living dinosaurs. He found a way to get DNA from the extinct animals by extracting blood from prehistoric insects fossilized in amber. In his head his whole idea of this park on an island not too far off the Costa Rican coast is fairly simple but things are about to go terribly wrong.

I was not really interested in dinosaurs when i picked this book up but it is filled with so much suspense and excitement that I didn't want to stop reading it. The one thing that some readers might need to get used to is that the action and suspense parts don't start happening until the end of the book. Some people might look at that as a bad thing but when your actually reading it and you can see the change in pace it makes you want to keep reading even more because you know that on the next page something bigger and better will happen.

Another thing that makes this book worth reading for anyone that likes a suspenseful book is the authors writing style. He has many characters in his book and they are all usually in different places doing completely different things throughout the story but he writes in a way thats easy to follow. I think this really makes the book even more amazing because all these things are happening at the same times in different places yet you can follow it an understand it very easily. If you are debating whether or not to read this book because you arent intrested in dinosaurs I strongly think you should read it anyways because it has an amazing story line and it will keep excited especially in the end when it leaves you with a big question.

STUDENT REFLECTION

88/100

For this class I think I have been doing pretty good. Im getting a good grade and i do all the work but some times im not as serious as i think i should be. In some of our writing assignments i cant really think of a good serious story to write or i dont want to spend more time thinking of the story then actually writing it so i usually just think of the random stuff that comes to my head and then write as i go. I think that i would like my work better if it was a little more serious.

In spanish I have a pretty good grade and i think i have been doing good considering its my first class on another language. The only bad thing that has happened to me in that class was a test on the grammar of these words in spanish. It was just really hard to get the rules of spanish grammar in my head because i am so used to english. That would be one thing i could work on is actually getting the grammar rules to make sense.

I haven't been doing as well in math but the grade i have now isnt what it will be because its mainly made of the small things we have done because we haven't turned in any of our projects yet. I also have somethings that will raise previous grades that she hasnt even graded yet and she said she doesnt kjnow when she will so i find that a little unfair for my grade. Other than that i think i should do pretty well in that class by the end of the semester.

A day in the life of a wierd guy at the train station...

Mike was a retired old man who was extremely bored. It was just a normal Saturday and he was alone in a stinky apartment. He got up out of bed and went to his little table and he sat on a little chair and ate some of the limited edition cocoa pebbles. He then realized that after he finished the cereal it had been a couple of hours and he almost missed the new episode of sponge bob. He ran through his house and he stubbed his toe when he was trying to get to the tv in time but he made it. Unfortunately he fell asleep during the end of it because hes an old man and he wasted another huge chunk of his day.

He woke up and was sad because he didnt get to go be hip with the young kids out there but then a great idea hit him. The only way to save his day was to go out in the real world with the real cool kid but first he needed some new clothes. He got in his car (which he thought was cool but it wasnt) and drove to the nearest mall. He had heard about an awesome shop that all the kids were talking about called Limited 2. So he looked at the map and couldn't see the red "You are here" dot because his eyesight wasn't very good so he asked some people for help but no one would help him so he was forced to wander around for a while.

When he realized that he was losing daylight he moved on to step 2 of his plan to hang out with the cool kids. He made a free hugs sign and he walked around in the center of the mall to try and "spread the love". Nobody seemed to want a hug and the old man thought it was because he didn't get limited 2 clothes but some kids thought that was sad so the filmed a video of it and they joined in and then put the video on youtube for all the little humanities classes to watch.

The man now felt good about himself and so he decided to move on to the final step of his plan. He drove out of the mall parking lot of the mall and his car immediately broke down. Again nobody helped him probably because his clothes were not from limited 2 so he was forced to hitch hike. A semi truck soon picked him up but the driver was a very scary lady. He knew that this old person wasn't as cool as he was so he tried to get out but the doors were locked. The old lady wasn't very smart and she forgot the doors were locked on the inside so Mike just unlocked the door and pulled a slow-mo James Bond style rolling jump out of the truck.

He hurt his stubbed toe again and so he knew he couldn't walk to the Ice cream store for his secret last plan so he decided to change his direction towards a local train station. He had a monthly pass so he was just going to get through the gate and dance around with the people playing their guitars for money.

He arrived at the station and as he was approaching the gate he saw a camera set up on the other side so he decided he wanted to make a cool face. He backed up and prepared his look. As he was walking through the gate he hit his stubbed toe and he started to cringe right as the picture was taken which resulted in a somewhat funny picture for the world to see.

In the end Mike was not mad because he had finally gotten on the internet and people would think hes was cool even if he didn't have limited 2 clothes on.

0 to 200 in 6 seconds (joke)

K mr.E ill try and remeber this as best i can

A man named bob couldnt think of a present to give to his wife.

His wife told him that she would be very sad if she didnt get a gift sitting on the driveway that went 0 to 200 in 6 seconds.

So the next day Bob had left early to work and when his wife woke up she saw a small box on the driveway.
She was puzzeled on how a car could be in that box and so she went out to open it.

Inside the box there was a small bathroom scale

Bob hasnt been seen for a week...

( basically he was calling her fat...HAHAHAHA)

Silence

http://www.davidmaisel.com/works/bigimage.asp?pic_code=lod02

John sat in his tiny room staring at the wall not saying a word. Not a sound was heard throughout the room, but then again that was normal. Silence was Johns best friend, and that was only true because no one else would fill that position. He was used to being alone and in silence and he had come to like that fact. He had the freedom to travel through his mind in peace. No longer would he have to deal with the problems of the world or the fact he was being taken away in the next few hours.

A call in the distance broke the silence and John stood up, but he couldn't get himself to leave the room. His mom stood at the end of the hallway staring straight at him. The stare that he was all to familiar with could break down any man and when he was around his parents he felt the need to look at the ground below him. He hated the fact that they thought that they were better than him and that he was some sort of alien. Like anything else he knew he couldn't do anything about it but imagine that it didn't exist in his perfect world that lived in his mind. His dad now joined his mom and they called out once again knowing they would not get an answer. His dad, who didn't want john to leave, stepped forward and grabbed John by the arms dragging him through the house and again John did not say a word.

There was a straight black car sitting out in front of the house awaiting its new prisoner. John had been dragged to the door and the driver grabbed him by the collar and "helped" John into the backseat. John watched as his house fade into the distance along with his family and when they were not but a dot in the distance he sat back. John liked it in this car even though he knew where it was taking him. There was a glass plate blocking him from the driver and like his room he was free to join the perfect world inside his head. The car drove through the night and eventually John had fallen asleep.

It was around 4:00 in the morning and the car slowly cam to a stop in front of some sort of hospital. John was thrown out and the driver went up to a man in a white coat standing near the entrance. The man in the white coat was Mr. Noodles and as john had did what he had always done when meeting knew people. He stared at his feet and didn't say a word. Mr. Noodles glared down at John in a friendly manner but after a couple seconds he grew impatient and he turned and walked away. His coat flying in the wind.

John was told to follow Mr. Noodles into the hospital and listen to everything he said. John was only 10 when he entered the hospital and he stared at everyone bigger and older that passed. He did not like his new home one bit. Mr. Noodles opened a door and John ran inside and it seemed he had made it to safety. He didn't notice Mr. Orange sitting in the chair across the room and when he heard his booming voice he almost hit his head on the desk he was hiding behind. He slowly moved his head up to look at the old man sitting across from him.

Mr. Noodles Started talking to Mr. Orange right away. He had said that John was their new friend and that he had a speech disorder, or in other words he was a mute. Mr. Orange looked at Johns eyes and calmly told him that they would help him. John did not necessarily want to be helped he liked being able to journey through his mind in silence he just wanted to be safe in his room right now. The old man held out his hand but John just stared. Eventually the old man pulled back and Mr.Noodles took john to his room.

John ran in and shut the door behind him when he arrived. He was unhappy when he realized how thin the walls were and he could hear everything going on outside. There was a single window in the back of the room and it was barred shut. There was a small mattress on the ground with a thin blanket and pillow laying on top of it. John was tired and he sat down on the small bed. He looked up trying to understand what was going on but like always he was trapped inside his head and with all the noise going on he couldn't think. He closed the pillow around his ears and slowly drifted into sleep.

A bang on the door awoke John and he knew it was time for breakfast. He got off of the bed and went over to the corner of the room by the window where his calender sat. He marked down 2191 under the day. It had been 6 years in this hospital for John and he was still as silent as ever. He was not living in this hospital every single day seemed as though it was a twisted dream. He had sat through everything not saying a word and not paying attention. John was uncooperative and he knew his time at this hospital would end soon.

He walked to the door and when he opened it he was surprised to see Mr. Noodles at the door. He was grabbed by the neck and he realized he was sick of being pushed around. He broke free and when Mr. Noodles turned around he punched as hard as he could. He felt the impact of his fist and then a sharp pain in his neck. He fell over to the floor and Mr. Orange was standing over him with a needle.

He woke up in a completely white room. He saw three people sitting on the other side of a window. They were surrounded by machines and as John tried to get up he realized he was strapped down. Mr. Orange's voice boomed through an intercom. He had said "John you have been uncooperative in our attempts to fix you in the last 6 years and it is now time to get you to listen the hard way." A lever was pulled and a shock was sent to Johns head. He cringed at the feeling but didn't say anything. The shocks would continue until John said something or until he passed. Each shock grew stronger and stronger until it reached the lethal amount. Mr. Orange gave a warning to John but when no answer came he pulled the last lever. A single tear fell down Johns cheek and as he fell limp there were no sounds. It was completely silent as the workers went to get his body. Nothing moved or made a noise almost as if it was giving John the final moments of silence that he had lived with and learned to love.

Johns death went unnoticed as did many other and he was soon dropped in the forever growing line to the crematorium. John was son forgotten and put into a smooth handmade can that had almost no deformities. Like John that can was simple on the outside but on the inside it contained something extremely incredible that would never be seen or heard.

WEekend HW

Dear Legislatures,

The ones making a lot of desicions that have to do with our countrys future are well educated, honest men, right? Of course they are i would say to myself but then I clicked the link above. I thought that it must be a joke, no men in our government would do something like that but sadly its the truth. The people running our country should be honest and trust worthy because thats what we want other people to see us as but some ignorant little fools come along and ruin that image for a few more votes. Now whats even more unbleivable is you guys say it is necessary and for some reason you small brains try to relate the lack of food to your actions. You guys are dispicable and deserve to be fired. I hope I never ever have to look at something like this again.

MANIMALS

Hey guys this is my post for our home work tonight :)

Hmmmm... this is a very tough question because it seems from all of the humans advantages in technology and things of that sort that we were meant to rule all animals. On the other hand we all need the same things all other animal needs to live and without those things such as water and food we are dead. Thats one of the main factors as to why I believe we are probably closer to being an animal bully because it seems that if we were meant to control all beasts and animals than we should be able to stand up to them in their home. If you come face to face with and aggresive wolf in the forest you will not live, but if a wolf ventures in to a city it can be taken down within minuets. Now there are millions of these instance with other animals. If a fly is in on a table or whatever else it is almost impossible to kill but the second it runs into a spider web its down. So overall i think i do believe that we are just animals with a very useful advantage over all the other animals. I hope that was a good enough response Mr. E :) see ya on friday wooo its almost friday

Word number four: Accord

My last word is accord which means that everything is in agreement or in harmony. I picked this picture because when two people shake hands they are usually agreeing on something.

Word number 3: deduct

My third word is deduct which means 2 things. To deduct something is to take away or subtract but deduct can also be a certain type of logical thinking that was used by sherlock holmes which is why i choose this picture.

Credit for picture: http://www.nidhin.com/images/free/arthur-conan-doyle-sherlock-holmes.jpg

Word number 2: Plagiarize

My second word is plagiarize and it means to basically take someones work and call it your own. A lot of people do this and it is illegal. My picture shows a kid copying the work from a book onto his paper and using it to get credit.

Credit for picture: http://www.citypaper.net/blogs/clog/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/plagiarism.GIF

Word number 1: INCOGNITO

For my first word i picked incognito. The word incognito means to have a secret identity like a super hero or basically blending in and hiding. That is why i picked the picture of a ninja because ninjas always hide/blend in with the enviroment.
